Policies

Independent TD Maureen O’ Sullivan & the Gregory Group policy positions are;

Change Political Structures

Political Structures need to be modernised and kept relevant to people’s lives.
Need for vigorous reform of national, regional and local elected government/authorities with people and community at the heart.
Need to ensure high quality public services.

Action on Employment

Job creation to be central to economic revival and renewal.
Re-employ our skilled workforce.
Retrain people for new jobs.
Invest in meaningful training and upskilling.
Reverse cut in minimum wage.

Improve Health Services

Introduce universal health insurance so no one is left behind or left waiting without appropriate healthcare.
Irish society can not afford the continuation of a multi-tiered health service benefitting the privileged.
Full implementation of primary community care.
Healthcare must be locally accessible, promoting people’s well-being.

Clean up Banking and Financial Services Sector

Implement strong legislative regulation of the banking and financial services sector.
Hold to account  those individuals and institutions responsible for Ireland’s recession.
Banking and financial services sector must be made to work for ordinary people and local communities.and not for privileged elites
Implement immediate mortgage supports to protect family homes.
Implement fairer taxation system on the principle that those who have more can afford to pay more.

Public Sector Reform

Strengthen and modernise the public service to continue to play a vital role in Irish Society.
Recognition that this may only be achieved through genuine social partnership of government with civic society, unions, employers and people.
Reject further creeping privatisation of public sector service delivery.
Improve public services to all people, especially vulnerable groups and communities in most need.
Involve and include communities in the strategic management and design of services.

Invest in Community Development

We must learn from inner city communities where since the ‘1970s the failure to invest resources and respond to problems of long-term unemployment, poorly targeted education schemes, unchecked availability of heroin and other drugs cost these communities a generation of lives and a tragic legacy.
Protect community development programmes and projects.
Work to make resources available to minimise the impact of current circumstances enforced by Ireland’s recession and greed-fuelled policies.

Reverse Cuts in Youth, Education, Community Development and Drugs projects

Immediate reversal of the savage cuts of the last 2 years on the community infrastructure that has achieved so much in developing community based responses, that have  encouraged access to higher educational achievement amongst young people, reduced the devastation of problem drug use and supported the rebuilding of lives and families.

Tackle Problem Drug Use & Organised Drug Crime

Full implementation of the National Drugs Strategy.
Adequate resources for actions and existing structures.
Complete inclusion of Alcohol in the Substance Misuse Strategy.
Continued action on availability of street tablets.
Ensure the social protection of our young people and vulnerable communities through greater awareness and information programmes.
Ensure strong responses to tackle organised drugs crime and use existing legislation
to weaken the corrupting power of gangs in local communities.
Ensure our communities are safe, less violent and gun-free.

Increase Access to Housing

Given the spectacular failure of Public Private Partnerships and the curtailment in Dublin City Council (DCC)  housing plans to deliver much needed decent housing and facilities, DCC and national government must ensure the urgent provision of necessary capital funds to complete the developments in full and expand further social and affordable housing programmes to respond to identified needs.
Enact long overdue legislation and regulation of private tenancies to protect the rights and conditions of people in private rented accommodation.
The operation of private tenancies must be by way of adequate independent enforcement and stiff penalties.

Improve Quality of Justice

Modernise the Justice system, including court services to ensure just, fair and equal treatment for all.
Build on the model of good practice of the Local Drugs Task Force Community Policing Forums.
Abolish the current Children’s Court system, which is wasting millions of Euros, causing endless hardship to families, not addressing the fundamental problems of law-breaking and anti-social behaviour and solving little in terms of juvenile crime.
Support for the progress of the principles at the heart of the proposed children’s referendum.
Adequate support to immigrants and asylum seekers, particularly unaccompanied minors (at least on a par with Irish children)

Fairer and Smarter Education

Ensure education is a right of all in Ireland.
Weighted investment in education to be targeted at poor and disadvantaged communities at all levels.
Continue investment in education as a  crucial part in economic revival and renewal.
Invest in improved sporting and physical activities in school education programmes.
Ensure full use of school facilities/ buildings for community and recreational activities outside normal school hours throughout the year.
Ensure ongoing adequate resources for students with special needs and students in need of learning support.

Support Social Protection and Welfare Programmes

Reverse cuts in social protection and welfare payments.
Ensure adequate payments levels for those who are vulnerable and in need of support
Maintain and increase pensions

Support Overseas Development

Support meaningful Overseas Development.
Ireland must live up to its commitments and obligations and meet .07% GDP target.
In the interest of a fairer and more just global society, full Irish support for the Tobin Tax, enforcing a small cost on global financial institutions and banking transactions.
Full endorsement and enforcement of UN Charters on Children’s / Human Rights
Demonstrate independent Irish leadership in EU foreign policies and development issues

Promote Sustainable Urban Environments

Promote green planned people-led urban environments and communities.
Protect and develop the natural resources, landscapes and woodlands  throughout Ireland for people resident in the country and not for financial exploitation, profit and unsustainable development.
Planning and development needs to be people-centred,socially focused and not driven by private gain or profit.

Equitable Water Management

Develop improved water management, treatment and delivery systems.
Promote Conservation of water in households, services and industry.
Full recognition of an individuals and families right to access clean water.
Excessive water use and waste should be penalised.

An Gaelige

Lán tacaíocht don Ghaelige; an teanga agus an cultúr.
Spreag bród agus dóchas sa Ghaelige.

Animal Welfare

Support a complete ban on hare coursing and hunting.
Support animal welfare
No exemptions on puppy farming.

Arts

Continued support for the arts to inspire, uplift and bring added meaning to our lives (body and mind) and contribute to our overall well-being.
Promote the Arts in playing a real, creative and meaningful role in education and at the heart of our communities.
